“Snow cover in the European Alps”
Abstract
Snow is an integral part of the earth system. With its high albedo it modulates the surface energy balance. Additionally, it is a vital part of the hydrological cycle, especially in mountain areas. Yet, with ongoing climate change, the timing and magnitude of snow is shifting. In this seminar, a brief overview will be given on the importance of snow and how it can be measured. Then, the climatology of snow cover in the European Alps will be set in context to the complex topography and the major climatic zones. Finally, past and future trends of snow cover indices in the European Alps will be shown.
Bio
Michael Matiu is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Trento, where he works on climate change scenarios and downscaling in the Greater Alpine region. A trained mathematician and statistician, he has extensive experience in applied statistics for earth system science, especially ecology and climatology. He received his PhD from the Technical University of Munich and recently finished an EU-funded fellowship on past and future snow cover in the European Alps.
This series of seminars is primarily targeted to Students attending our double-degree programme of MSc in Environmental Meteorology.
